The Captivating History of the Escalade: A Tale of Bravery and Traditions

The Fascinating History of the Escalade: A Tale of Bravery and Traditions

The Escalade Festival has its roots in a heroic episode of Geneva's history.

On the night of December 11-12, 1602, the troops of the Duke of Savoy attempted to seize Geneva by surprise. The soldiers planned to scale the city walls (hence the name "Escalade"), but the vigilant and united Genevans successfully repelled the attack.

One of the most memorable acts was that of Mère Royaume, a courageous woman who, upon spotting a soldier climbing the walls, poured a cauldron of boiling soup onto him. This heroic act alerted the townspeople and played a key role in defending the city.

In tribute to this event, chocolate cauldrons have become a quintessential symbol of the festival. Filled with sweets, they are broken together with family or friends after reciting the iconic phrase:
"Thus perished the enemies of the Republic!"
